How To Avoid The Duplicate Content Penalty On Your Own Website

I never knew that it was possible to get penalized for having duplcate content on your own website, but I have been told by SEO experts that you can. Not only that, but because the search engine spiders/bots are not human (obviously), they cannot tell the difference between www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com. They can and do index pages from your site twice, one with the www and one without.

I read all about it here at webmarketingnow.com, so you can check out the original article and the fix for it. The fix is very simple and just needs you to add a few lines of code to your .htaccess file.

The article was also very funny as it explained how stupid the bots can be. First indexing the same page from the same website twice without realising it and then penalizing that website because it has duplicate content on it.

I do not know if this will work in wordpress, but it doesn’t really matter as f course there is a plugin for it :)

The plugin is called Permalink Redirect and you can download it directly here from scott.yang.id.au. This pugin replies a 301 permanent redirect, if the requested ur is different from the entry’s (or archive’s) permalink, as was set by you. It is ensures that only one url is associated with each blog entry and therefore cannot be indexed twice.

It is definitely compatible with wordpress 2.5.1 (the latest version) as I am using it here on my site.

I learnt something new today, hope you did too.
