My Favourite Site Ever Part 2
Why did I put this post in tutorials I hear you asking.
No, I did not press the wrong button
In life you need to look at the successful and copy them.
This sales page in itself is a great tutorial on how to do things. Running through his/her product is another tutorial. I honestly loved it and think it may have been the best $7 I spent this year.
You will not be disappointed in this if you read between the lines
You can tell how much I loved it as I am still thinking about it today and enough to blog about it again.
404 Errors And How To Make Them Work To Your Advantage
A 404 error is what you get when you look for a page on a website that does not exist. It may have been there once upon a time, but the website owner may have moved it or changed the name. The page will normally look like the image to your right.
On a static website (a website that consists of set pages) if there is nothing in place for these ‘missing’ or ‘moved’ pages the user will have no option but to click their back button or try someone else’s website for the information they were looking for.
If you use Wordpress on your site (which creates a non-static website) this should not be a problem as if what is typed into the browser does not have a page then Wordpress automatically re-directs you to a 404 error message. You can see what I mean by visiting this link http://www.onthenetdollars.com/my-404-error-message (it opens in a new window so you will not loose your place) which is not a real page on my site. Any pages visited on my site that do not exist will look like this & I can change it any time I like through Wordpress or in my html editor.
If your website is static there are some scripts available that will ebable you to create a 404 error message of some description. I use and highly recommend ScriptSmart as there are lots of other cool little scripts included for a very reasonable price. ScriptSmart will also send you an e-mail telling you what page the user went to, which is useful in many ways. One of which is that you coul create a page for that url with related information on to keep people from leaving your site.
Some hosting companies let you customise your 404 page and upload it to your server, but you need to check with them ans ensure you use the right format for them to serve it when necessary.
If you are using Wordpress and would like to be informed of the url’s people are visiting on your site there is a handy plugin called 404 Notifier that you can download from the developer’s site here.
What Is FTP AND How Do I Do It?
‘FTP‘ stands for ‘File Transfer Protocol’. This is the language used for file transfer from a computer to a computer across the ‘World Wide Web’ (’WWW’).
Your hosting company will usually supply you with FTP log ins, which will normally consist of; ftp.yoursite.com, your username and your password.
Then, all you need is a program like SmartFTP. You can download this software for free and the site also has videos on there to show you how to install and use it.
Once you have logged in you will see, it’s basically a folder, which looks like the window that you would see if you opened one of the folders have on your computer.
All you do is copy your website files from their folder on your computer and paste them into the ‘public_html’ folder through your chosen FTP program and then they are live.
NOTE: Normally you upload all your files into the ‘public_html’ folder, but your host will let you know if this is different.
The main page of your website should be named ‘index’ i.e. indx.html or index.php.
A term commonly used in ’script’ instruction manuals is something like this … CHMOD the folder blabla to XXX. CHMOD is a command that changes the mode of a file and the x’s (numbers) relate to the three modes a file can have turned on or off: read ability, write ability, and execute ability. Each mode can be set for either the owner, the members of the owner’s group, or all users.
To change the CHMOD in SmartFTP, you right click on the relevant folder, select CHMOD and type in the relevant numbers. (most FTP programs run on the same principal for this, but always refer to their help files if you are unsure)
Once you have uploaded all your pages … TEST, TEST, TEST and TEST again, because if something does not work it looks unprofessional. When was the last time you bookmarked or remembered a site where something was not working.
