This One Is For You Sherry Ann Oakes

Good old Monday rolling back again. For those of you that go out to work this seems to be the hardest day of the week, but for me it is one of the best because I get a break from running round after my three boys over the weekend, especially this one as my husband was away :)

So, Sherry Ann Oakes filled out the ‘I Want To Learn About’ box, a few days ago, when she signed up at IMMembership.com, with “anything you could possibly teach me would be so appreciated.!”

I was quite touched by this as only about 10% of people that sign up actually fill anything into this box and it is normally short like “how to build a link”, which I have already answered and elaborated on this week. Sherry Ann is obviously keen to learn and get started and almost certainly an action taker. Am I right Sherry Ann?

I have taken my time in deciding what I should teach Sherry Ann & I have decided to do a 30 day training to get a brand new site up and running including how to get traffic and sales. I know this has been done many times, but never for free and not in the way I am going to approach it.

The main problem that most people face when they get started online is that there is sooooo much information and sooooo much hype and tooooo many products that they are completely overwhelmed. No one seems to start something and see it through to the end. They are always leaving it half done and then moving onto the next big thing (launch). I just heard about a $197 offer that is completely ridiculous, because so much is included on so many different topics it is not going to help anyone. Even if someone  actually took the time to read it all, they would be so  overwhelmed they would not be able to do anything with any of it.

I know how it is and what you are going through because that was me last year. I had about 200 domains, none were finished completely and some did not even have anything on them apart from the godaddy parked page. I had accumulated about 350 gigabytes of articles, software and products that I gave up sorting them out because it was just taking up too much time. Finally in September 2008 (when the kids went back to school after their 2 month holiday) I sored myself out. I sold all my domains, bar 5 or so, got rid of all my hosting accounts, bar 1, and spent two weeks just sorting the ’stuff’ I had accumulated into some sort of order so that I could see what I had. In October I really got going. I created a system from the knowledge I had gained in my time online and built 2 websites at a time. One website I built following the system and the other I changed the system slightly. After two weeks I looked at my results and went with the system that was working the best. I then built 2 more sites and so on and so on, until now I have about 30 sites all making money. I also took one day a week ‘off work’ to learn something new. Personally I need brain food, but it is good to keep up with the news and what is going on in the world.

Some make more than others and I don’t want to go into how much I am earning, because it changes from month to month and I want you to know that you do have to work. If you are looking for a hands off solution to $100,000 a month then by all means buy the product selling it and follow it to the letter. When it doesn’t work how you thought it would you can come back and do my training :)

The training I am offering is for anyone that is willing to commit to themselves (you don’t need to commit to anyone else but you as you are doing this for you) that they will stick to it and see it through to the end. You have nothing to loose as it is not costing you anything.

I am going to get started probably Monday next week as I have some other posts already in mind for this week. Before I get going with it though, I will give you some guidelines so you can get ready …

  1. ALL the tools I will use for the training are FREE (I will assume that you have none to be sure everyone is on the same page)
  2. DO NOT Buy Any More Stuff - whatever it is you do not need it for this training (if you still want it once you have finished, please go ahead, it is your money)
  3. YOU MUST HAVE one domain name already registered with hosting set up ready for Day 1 (I will post some videos on how to do this before I start the training and it can be done in one day)
  4. This is my system. Exactly what I do myself when starting up a new site, just in 30 days rather than two weeks. We all have our own pace, so you can go quicker or slower, although I don’t recommend you do more than two days training per day.

I hope this is the kind of thing you were after Sherry Ann :)

Where Has BlogRush.com Gone?

I just noticed today that my blogrush.com widget was blank. I looked up their site and lo and behold it is blank too.

Sure enough when I did a search on Google they had a cached page, thankfully, saying that they were shutting down because of various issues including security risks andnot being able to patrol the quality of the sites. The page was cached on 6 Dec 2008, soless than a week ago, but no idea how long the page was up for saying that they were going to shut down.

I would of thought the least they could do was to send an e-mail to all members letting them know. I mean how often do you go and look at websites that you have widgets for. What if an advertiser was to do this to you with no warning. I think there would be a lot of flung mud.

If you want more info about it you can read what John Reese had to say on his blog, here. His post is dated the end of October, shows how much attention I paid to my own sidebar … lol

A guy named Manuel Viloria also wrote an interesting post about it, here.

Anyway, they are closed, so I want to replace my widget with another. I was thinking of blogcatalog.com, what do you think? What ‘community’ widgets do you have on your blogs? Let me know by posting a comment below.

Trackbacks And Time Wasted

Visual breakdown of the parts of a HTML element.Image via Wikipedia

Today I lost over two hours worth of my precious working time trying to figure out why my trackback links were not showing up at anywhere in my posts.

I looked all around my Wordpress dashboard, I went to the Wordpress forums, I searched google, but no luck (well at least not at first). I found lots of information on trackbacks themselves … what are they, how do they work, how do they benefit you etc…, but nothing on how to get them to show up.

In your dashboard uder settings and discussion you just need to tick the box next to ‘Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)’ and you should be set to go, but this did not work for me.

Finally someone responded to me on the Wordpress forum and asked me if a small piece of code was in my single.php. I looked and sure enough it was not there …….. aaaagggghhhh.

I added the snippet of code to my single.php where I wanted my trackback link to show, uploaded it and it worked first time. I was relieved, but frustrated at the amount of time it had taken me to fix it.

The theme I am using is from someone who has created over 50 themes, so I presumed his would be good and I liked the layout etc… I have not looked at his other themes in too much detail, but as I go through this one making my tweaks I notice more and more simple errors like having the closing </body> and </html> codes before the footer is called. This is bad news for people who have no knowledge of php at all, it looks more like mumbo jumbo that html, as they would find it much harder to add the code, let alone know where to add it.

I will ensure that all my themes and compliant with the necessary standards and are marked for people to be able to change things should they need/want to.

In case this is also a problem for you and your trackbacks are not showing in your theme, you need to add the following piece of code to your single.php where you want the trackback url to show up …

<a href=”<?php trackback_url(); ?>” rel=”trackback”>Trackback</a>

If for some reason you do not have a single.php please refer to the tutorial on ‘How To Create Missing Files For Your Wordpress Theme‘.
