I Want To Learn About Link Building

John signed up at IMMembership.com yesterday and said he wanted to know more about link building, so I decided to answer him as fully as I can today.

Firstly before any sort of link building is done you need to have a website with content. This can also be an affiliate link redirect, but I would always use some form of content.

Now this man John used an e-mail that was from a domain he owned, so I went along to have a look. I wanted to see if I could get some background on him, but the site is just a fresh wordpress installation. I had a look using the way back machine as the domain is well over 4 years old, but there is nothing but a holding page to see.

There is something holding this man back from building a site and in most cases this is either that the person is chasing the next ‘greatest thing’ or they are worrying over building the best site in the world.

START TODAY. Get something up on the site, even if it a ‘I don’t know where to start, but I will’ kind of thing :)

Now once you have something on your site you can start building links. Below is a list of how to do build links, in no particular order. You will no doubt have seen this list before, but if you don’t do them you will not get backlinks. People always seem to think there is something missing and 99.9% of the tilme there is … they do not take action.

1) Social bookmarking - use a keyword rich title, description and as many tags/keywords as you can. Varying your title and description will help too.

2) Article Marketing - Completely unique articles will do the best, but If you are no good at writing you can just write one unique article and spin/re-write it to be about 40% unique (although the more unique the better) and submit it to the article directories. You can check the uniqueness for free at Dupecop.

3) Submit your RSS feed to the RSS Directories - if you have a html or php or asp site and are not using a blogging platform like wordpress that gives you a feed automatically visit Dapper.net and get an rss feed.

4) Trackback - this is only relevant to wordpress users, but if you link to another wordpress users blog post and they have trackbacks enabled they will see the post you made the next time they log into their dashboard and can approve or not approve it like a comment. Most people approve these trackbacks giving you a relevant backlink.

Now this list of 4 ways is not in any way exhaustive. You can also comment on other people’s blogs and post in forums with a link in your signature to your site. Like I have said more than once the most important thing is to start and once you have a few links in forums and on other people’s blogs and in the social sites other people will start to link to you too, if your content is worth linking to of course :)

A great example is at the end of this post there is a link with the title ‘Related articles by Zemanta’. Zemanta is a firefox add on that integrates with your wordpress dashboard. It might integrate with blogger too, I’m not sure. Anyway the link below was a suggestion from them on related content to what I am writing about in this post. Now the guy who wrote the article on the link missed out any links to his website in his article which completely defeats the object of article writing, but it still proves my point. People CAN and WILL find your website and use your content if you put it out there.

So get to it. Create 10 links to your site every day in the hope to get 4 and after a month you could have as many as 300 backlinks meaning you would beat most of your competition out of the water.

Let me know what you do to get backlinks or if you have had success doing the above. I love to hear from you.

Flipping Wordpress Blogs

Firstly I want to apologise for my not being around over the last month. After finally getting my kidney stone blasted I was in a lot of pain with an infection that kept me away from the computer. I am back on track now after wading through the mountain of 3000 odd e-mails that were waiting for me on my return :)

I wanted to bring up the subject of flipping wordpress blogs today, as opposed to flipping html or php websites. From the many e-mails I get from you guys and gals there seems to be some confusion on how this would work and why they are worth more. AND they are worth more.

There are a few more technicalities in flipping wordpress blogs than an html or php website, but they are minor. I have broken the process down into small chunks below. If something doesn’t make sense ‘Google It’ as it is ouside the scope of this post. Obviously if the buyer is keeping the current hosting that you provide this is all irrelevant as it would be with another type of website, no moving involved.

FLIPPING A WORDPRESS BLOG PROCESS

1) Back up the database for the wordpress blog. This is the most important step. If you miss this and something goes wrong the blog is gone forever.

2) Back up (download using a ftp program) ALL FILES and FOLDERS for the wordpress blog. This is the easiest way to ensure that nothing is missed.

3) Make a note of any specific settings needed just incase they don’t get transferred.

4) Change the nameservers, upload ALL the files to the new server, create a database and import the backup from step 1, change the wp-config.php to reflect any changes in the database details should you need to.

5) Check everything is working ok, but you should be good to go.

NOTE: You can install wordpress through fantastico although it is not advised and harder to make certain changes.

The benefits of flipping wordpress blogs over other websites are that they can be updated more often, can include more info, are easier for you to create, are liked more by the search engines. There are also lots of things that can be done with simply with a wordpress blog that would need a lot more work and coding with an html or php website, like a membership site, affiliate/affiliate site or store site.

As you can see the possibilities are endless. So get going flipping those wordpress blogs :)

I have a new theme coming for you in a few weeks as well as some inside info on some great new plugins to help explode your traffic. I am going on holiday next week, but should have internet access over there to keep up to date. I tell you a few weeks out and you almost have to go back to square one. The one thing I learnt from this though is that you should only stay subscribed to people’s lists if they actually offer you something of value …

My First Wordpress Theme Is Finally Finished

List of longest cantilever bridgesImage via Wikipedia

I can’t believe it, but I have finally finished my very first wordpress theme. I called it ‘Making It Web 2.0′ as it is a web 2.0 style theme.

I have to admit that when I first started out I felt like the picture. I could see the end, but it was quite far away. Now that it is completed, I am so proud of myself :p I have hand coded this theme with love and sweat from a .psd (photoshop) file and I am very very happy with the results.

It has taken me a long while, but I have spent every free bit of time I have had in the last 48 hours on it and it just came together.

The part that took the longest was the tweaking at the end, which of course I could have carried on doing forever … lol.

So you know what it looks like, I am using it here :)

You can use it on as many sites as you like and make any necessary modifications, but you must leave the footer link in place. I never understood all about the licence bits and pieces, I think it is creative commons, but I will look into it an confirm tomorrow.

If you would like to remove the footer link, please send me $10 via paypal to admin [at] onthenetdollars.com and let me know which sites you will be using it on.

I am going to be making it in more colours, so if you have any suggestions or preferences, please post them below for all to see.

Just fill in the form below to download it
