The Free Blog Software VS Paid Blog Software Debate
First off the bat I want to explain that I only use wordpress. I use it on all my sites even if they are not blog sites. In fact I just set up a finance comapny website for my brother in the UK and used wordpress as a CMS (content management solution) and he was astounded with the result. Due to the built in features like permalinks and and the rss feed, not even going into the sheer number of themes and plugins there are, that you can now add with a few clicks of the few mouse, it is without a doubt, hands down, the best there is. PLUS it is free and there are loads of forums dedicated to it where you can get help and support.
For the beginners (newbies) to website design, building a website, trying to make money online, the five minute install explained on the main wordpress website, http://www.wordpress.org, really does work. You can search youtube nowadays for anything and almost all reputable hosting providers offer free video tutorials on how to do things. You can also install wordpress through fantastico, if your hosting proivder offer cpanel.
The only problem with the above methods are that for each install you need to go through and delete the first post, the blogroll links and set all your settings to how you like them. Then you have to add all your plugins and themes.
I personally have two ways of installing wordpress so that all my themes, plugins and settings are ready from the off, one free and one paid, hence the debate
The FREE Way
I have a test site with a blank version of wordpress installed. It has all the plugins I want installed and a range of themes that I use often. It also has all of the settings set just how I like them, including the permalink.
When I want to set up a new site I zip up all the files via the file manager in cpanel and download them.I download the wp-config.php separately and change the details to that of the new domain. I then backup the mysql database to my desktop via php myadmin and do a find and replace with the details of the new domain.
I have done this many times and it takes about 45 minutes as I then have to check it is all working.
The PAID Way
About a year ago I found out about an online piece of ’software’, if you can call it that, that installs wordpress in a few clicks with the settings, plugins and themes set just right. On top of that, which is already fantastic, it can bookmark your posts automatically across a range of social bookmarking sites AND ACCOUNTS. It can also add keyword targeted content, to be dripped over time, in just a few more clicks. You can then submit your site to the main rss directories with another few clicks. AND this all happens from one main control panel. You can even access your wordpress admin through it. There are a few more fab features which you can read about on the sales page …
As a current member I know that a new version of Firepow is going to be released in the next few weeks. Andrew (the owner) has also told us that the price is going up, which is why I wanted to give you the chance to get in before it does.
There are two levels of membership … Basic Level, which is not basic by any stretch f the imagination as you get everything, and Premium Level, which has everything the same as the basic level, but you have the added option to you add blog posts with links back to other blogs using Firepow, owned by other people. Andrew has also added a lot of his own sites to ensure that every topic is covered. As the blog owner you can also deny articles, if you want to ensure that they are 100% on topic (I don’t as this is great for ensuring your site is using latent semantic indexing, which basically means you cover exercise if you have a weight loss site).
There is also of course a support forum and I have never had to wait more than 24 hrs (a little longer over the weekend) for an answer from the actual staff.
I think that any time saver like this is worth the money. I have a few people that work for me in India and the Phillipenes, so I can get them to set up 10 sites in less than an hour (the same time it would take to manually put up one site) and the cost to me is less than $5. I can then spend that time doing other more productive things.
What programs do you use and how do they help you?
This One Is For You Sherry Ann Oakes
Good old Monday rolling back again. For those of you that go out to work this seems to be the hardest day of the week, but for me it is one of the best because I get a break from running round after my three boys over the weekend, especially this one as my husband was away
So, Sherry Ann Oakes filled out the ‘I Want To Learn About’ box, a few days ago, when she signed up at IMMembership.com, with “anything you could possibly teach me would be so appreciated.!”
I was quite touched by this as only about 10% of people that sign up actually fill anything into this box and it is normally short like “how to build a link”, which I have already answered and elaborated on this week. Sherry Ann is obviously keen to learn and get started and almost certainly an action taker. Am I right Sherry Ann?
I have taken my time in deciding what I should teach Sherry Ann & I have decided to do a 30 day training to get a brand new site up and running including how to get traffic and sales. I know this has been done many times, but never for free and not in the way I am going to approach it.
The main problem that most people face when they get started online is that there is sooooo much information and sooooo much hype and tooooo many products that they are completely overwhelmed. No one seems to start something and see it through to the end. They are always leaving it half done and then moving onto the next big thing (launch). I just heard about a $197 offer that is completely ridiculous, because so much is included on so many different topics it is not going to help anyone. Even if someone actually took the time to read it all, they would be so overwhelmed they would not be able to do anything with any of it.
I know how it is and what you are going through because that was me last year. I had about 200 domains, none were finished completely and some did not even have anything on them apart from the godaddy parked page. I had accumulated about 350 gigabytes of articles, software and products that I gave up sorting them out because it was just taking up too much time. Finally in September 2008 (when the kids went back to school after their 2 month holiday) I sored myself out. I sold all my domains, bar 5 or so, got rid of all my hosting accounts, bar 1, and spent two weeks just sorting the ’stuff’ I had accumulated into some sort of order so that I could see what I had. In October I really got going. I created a system from the knowledge I had gained in my time online and built 2 websites at a time. One website I built following the system and the other I changed the system slightly. After two weeks I looked at my results and went with the system that was working the best. I then built 2 more sites and so on and so on, until now I have about 30 sites all making money. I also took one day a week ‘off work’ to learn something new. Personally I need brain food, but it is good to keep up with the news and what is going on in the world.
Some make more than others and I don’t want to go into how much I am earning, because it changes from month to month and I want you to know that you do have to work. If you are looking for a hands off solution to $100,000 a month then by all means buy the product selling it and follow it to the letter. When it doesn’t work how you thought it would you can come back and do my training
The training I am offering is for anyone that is willing to commit to themselves (you don’t need to commit to anyone else but you as you are doing this for you) that they will stick to it and see it through to the end. You have nothing to loose as it is not costing you anything.
I am going to get started probably Monday next week as I have some other posts already in mind for this week. Before I get going with it though, I will give you some guidelines so you can get ready …
- ALL the tools I will use for the training are FREE (I will assume that you have none to be sure everyone is on the same page)
- DO NOT Buy Any More Stuff - whatever it is you do not need it for this training (if you still want it once you have finished, please go ahead, it is your money)
- YOU MUST HAVE one domain name already registered with hosting set up ready for Day 1 (I will post some videos on how to do this before I start the training and it can be done in one day)
- This is my system. Exactly what I do myself when starting up a new site, just in 30 days rather than two weeks. We all have our own pace, so you can go quicker or slower, although I don’t recommend you do more than two days training per day.
I hope this is the kind of thing you were after Sherry Ann

I Want To Learn About Link Building
John signed up at IMMembership.com yesterday and said he wanted to know more about link building, so I decided to answer him as fully as I can today.
Firstly before any sort of link building is done you need to have a website with content. This can also be an affiliate link redirect, but I would always use some form of content.
Now this man John used an e-mail that was from a domain he owned, so I went along to have a look. I wanted to see if I could get some background on him, but the site is just a fresh wordpress installation. I had a look using the way back machine as the domain is well over 4 years old, but there is nothing but a holding page to see.
There is something holding this man back from building a site and in most cases this is either that the person is chasing the next ‘greatest thing’ or they are worrying over building the best site in the world.
START TODAY. Get something up on the site, even if it a ‘I don’t know where to start, but I will’ kind of thing
Now once you have something on your site you can start building links. Below is a list of how to do build links, in no particular order. You will no doubt have seen this list before, but if you don’t do them you will not get backlinks. People always seem to think there is something missing and 99.9% of the tilme there is … they do not take action.
1) Social bookmarking - use a keyword rich title, description and as many tags/keywords as you can. Varying your title and description will help too.
2) Article Marketing - Completely unique articles will do the best, but If you are no good at writing you can just write one unique article and spin/re-write it to be about 40% unique (although the more unique the better) and submit it to the article directories. You can check the uniqueness for free at Dupecop.
3) Submit your RSS feed to the RSS Directories - if you have a html or php or asp site and are not using a blogging platform like wordpress that gives you a feed automatically visit Dapper.net and get an rss feed.
4) Trackback - this is only relevant to wordpress users, but if you link to another wordpress users blog post and they have trackbacks enabled they will see the post you made the next time they log into their dashboard and can approve or not approve it like a comment. Most people approve these trackbacks giving you a relevant backlink.
Now this list of 4 ways is not in any way exhaustive. You can also comment on other people’s blogs and post in forums with a link in your signature to your site. Like I have said more than once the most important thing is to start and once you have a few links in forums and on other people’s blogs and in the social sites other people will start to link to you too, if your content is worth linking to of course
A great example is at the end of this post there is a link with the title ‘Related articles by Zemanta’. Zemanta is a firefox add on that integrates with your wordpress dashboard. It might integrate with blogger too, I’m not sure. Anyway the link below was a suggestion from them on related content to what I am writing about in this post. Now the guy who wrote the article on the link missed out any links to his website in his article which completely defeats the object of article writing, but it still proves my point. People CAN and WILL find your website and use your content if you put it out there.
So get to it. Create 10 links to your site every day in the hope to get 4 and after a month you could have as many as 300 backlinks meaning you would beat most of your competition out of the water.
Let me know what you do to get backlinks or if you have had success doing the above. I love to hear from you.
