Important Google Adsense Changes

If you are a part of google adsense you should have received an e-mail today about changes to adsense that need to be reflected in your privacy policy.

They are calling it Interest-based advertising and this is what the e-mail said about it …

Interest-based advertising will allow advertisers to display ads based on a user’s previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser website and also to reach users based on their interests (e.g. “sports enthusiast”).  To develop interest categories, we will recognise the types of web pages that users visit throughout the Google content network.  As an example, if they visit a number of sports pages, we will add them to the “sports enthusiast” interest category.  To learn more about your associated account settings, please visit the AdSense Help Centre.

It should help with your adverts being more targetted to the specific searcher, which can’t be a bad thing, but it does sound a bit like behavioral targetting, which I am not sure I 100% agree with.

The e-mail also says that you must update your privacy policy to reflect the use of this new advertising but the 8th April 2009. This does not give people a lot of time (under 4 weeks), especially if they have 100 sites or more. Google also say in the e-mail that because of different laws over the world they cannot help you with the wording of the privacy policy, making it even harder to ensure you have it right.

If you know what a privacy policy should say about this, please leave a comment for others below :)

I personally do not use adsense on any of my sites at the moment as I am seeing higher returns from affiliate marketing. In my testing I found that the less options, the better the conversions on what you want them to do, but you should be testing this on your own sites.

Regardless, you should still have at least a privacy policy. A terms of use or a terms and conditions is also a good idea. Saying that, I need to get mine up .. lol

Have a good weekend and we’ll catch up next week.

Wordpress Theme Stress

If you have been with me for a while you will know that I am a bit of a Wordpress Junkie, especially when it comes to themes and plugins. I especially like to make my own themes, but it is time consuming and there are now great tools out there that can do it all for you in a few clicks.

I have been trying to finish three themes for the past few months, but there is always something more pressing. So I tested out all the ‘theme making’ software and my favourite is Artisteer. They are having a special on the pro version and at $99 if you like that sort of thing, it is the best I have found so far. It also makes html templates and they promise Joomla is coming soon. I really wish they had an affiliate program, but they have been saying for six months that it is coming, so I have stopped holding my breath :)

While I am trying to find time to play around with my new toy I decided to opt for the Flexibility Theme as the current one is boring me. The flexibility theme is simple and elegant and business like and classy and flexible, which all sound good to me. You can see it in action here and because I like to change things often, now I can all through my admin panel.

What is your favourite theme and why?

Is Affiliate Marketing Really Profitable?

I know I am supposed to be answering your questions, but I had to let you know about this now. I made a big mistake in my ‘internet marketing’ in that I presumed affiliate marketing was a non earner and ignored it. I bought a few affiliate teaching type packages, but never got to finish them all the way through, so never made anything and just wrote it off.

Well I know know that this was truly a huge mistake and I probably would have saved myself hundreds of dollars had I stuck with it until the end.

Recently I met someone online called Jason Brown who had never heard of clickbank, but is making over $3000 a month as an affiliate marketer. He does not own any websites, he does not pay for hosting, he does not use adwords, infact his outgoings are $0. YET, he is making in the region of $36,000 a year. Now I can see you looking at the figures saying that is not that much, but how much are you earning a year? How much time do you give to your employer for that time? Well I bet it is less than Jason who is currently working just 10 hours a week. He knows if he doubled his efforts he could earn more, but for the moment he is happy with where he is at. $100 would be nice for all of us.

I was talking to Jason about clickbank and how big the commissions could be and this got him very interested, so we decided to do a test and see what would happen, so I bought him a domain name on the 5th Dec 08, just 10 days ago, I set up hosting for him and I explained to him everything I had learnt about clickbank product launches through e-mails that I have received in the past.

Jason went away got on with things and I forgot about it until yesterday when he told me to look at this link … http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=the+next+affiliate+idol&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

He then went onto explain that 5 out of these 10 listings belonged to him. I was astounded as this is the most important keyword for this particular product and this all in just 10 days AND out of 1,800,000 results. For the keyword with bonus at the end he has 6 listings on the homepage. (as of today, 15 Dec 2008 8pm GMT+1) I thought this was a one off, but he explained that he get’s these types of ersults every time he promotes any sort of affiliate product, he just normally does it without a domain of his own. I was astounded to say the least. He explained that he had only used the information that he gave me and information he was given by the creator of the product he is promoting.

The product that he is promoting is actually an affiliate markeing video course. You can read all about it at his site and you can order from the sales page here. I just got mine as he told me the creator is putting up the price in the next few days. I am going to go through it all this week and get started. I’ll let you know how I get on.

So Jason says YES affiliate marketing is really profitable.
