Is The Number 1 Spot On Google Good?

Very interesting post title you may say, but honestly there is a reason to my madness …

I just found out that one of my blog posts is number 1 on google.com out of 20,600,000 competitors for the keyword phrase BLOG HOW TO ADD PAGE TO IN CATEGORIES (you can look at it here, it opens in a new window).

Now are you thinking wow as in ‘well done, how in the h%$£ did you do that’ or wow as in ’so what, I am being sarcastic’?

At first I was blown away and wondering how I did it, I can assure you it was not on purpose :) But now, looking at my traffic statistics I realise that it doesn’t mean very much as it is not bringing me any traffic. I actually have another number 1 spot, a number 4 spot, a number 8 spot and a number 9 spot, but none of them seem to help me increase my 50 odd visitors a day.

Question: So what am I doing wrong?

Answer: Well first off it was an accident, but honestly, how many people do you know that are likely to type into any search engine ‘BLOG HOW TO ADD PAGE TO IN CATEGORIES’! If I change it to ‘how do i create a category page for wordpress’, which I think is much more likely to be searched for, there are only 1,390,000 results and I am nowhere to be seen (not on the first 10 pages anyway).Basically, I am not thinking about what people might be searching for to find my post/information/webpage before I write my title.

Solution: Think about what people might be searching for to find my post/information/webpage before I write my title.

I now realise that a number 1 spot on google means nothing unless it is for a searched keyword phrase. I knew this before, but you have to admit, when was the last time anyone pointed it out :)

I hope that you have learnt something from this post too, please feel free to post your comments or write about it on your blog and link here.
